For many years, the building at 25th and Harris was owned by the Willamette Valley Baptist Association. They were unable to establish a steady congregation but several other Christian organizations held services here. In the mid 1990's Geni Morrow, a neighbor and owner of The EDGE (Elite Dance Gymnastics Exhibitions) , moved her classes here. Her classes thrived and hundreds of young boys and girls took class and also performed on several stages in Eugene.
Geni and her husband, Charlie Magee, bought the building in 2006 and, since it was no longer a church, began the process of obtaining a conditional use permit from the city to operate a Neighborhood Activity Center. That process is complete and The Reach Center is about to open.
Geni has a 35 year teaching/dancing background which is as varied as it is extensive. As a teacher she has coached gymnastics throughout Oregon, Alaska, and Hawaii, as well as at the prestigious National Academy of Artistic Gymnastics. She decided to combine her dance and gymnastics experience and founded The EDGE in 1992. As a performer she has danced with Lifters, Inc., the 5 by 2 Dance Co., University of Alaska, the Jones-Ludin Dance Company, the Eugene Jazz Company, Oregon Coast Ballet Company, San Nicholas and Company, and Mary Seereiter. She is the Executive Director and producer of Dance for a Reason and co-owner of The Reach Center.
Charlie Magee has been a graphic designer since 1986 and was an early adopter of the Apple Macintosh platform as a design tool. His multimedia work has been shown in galleries in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo. His design practice is limited to small, local businesses and he primarily creates websites and designs for print. He's Geni's gopher.
